As many of you will know, I live in rural Perthshire, Scotland and each year get involved and support some amazing charity events run by my friend David Fox Pitt.
There are thousands of events in the UK adventure diary to choose from… the reason I continue to like Wildfox Events is that they have a big charity focus and are very original, always pretty challenging adventures and are set in some of the best scenery in the UK. The track record of Wildfox is staggering, having raised over £20 million. Last year, their event participants walked, ran, kayaked, cycled and swam over 120,000 miles… that is about 5 times around the equator!
And so for 2013 I thought I would up the challenge and enter three of Wildfox’s toughest events – the Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathon, The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp and the Martin Currie Roy Rob. I am posting this blog to set my challenges in writing and also to encourage you!
This is a new event for me and a tough one to start with. Starting and finishing in Blairgowrie, the Cateran Trail takes you through Highland Perthshire and Angus from Kirkmichael, Spittal of Glenshee and Kirkton of Glenisla to finish the 52-mile hike. Designed for teams of between three and six, the Yomp has three different distances to choose from: 52 miles for Gold, 36.5 miles for Silver or 22 miles for Bronze. The Yomp is to raise essential funds for ABF The Soldiers Charity and the The Prince’s Trust
22nd June Martin Currie Rob Roy Challenge – a 16 mile run and 39 mile cycle
I took part in the Rob Roy last year with a team of utter eccentrics – all dressed as Team Marvel characters! Running 16 miles and cycling 19 miles in a spiderman outfit is too much lycra, even for me! Starting in Drymen, you follow in the footsteps of the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor with a 16 mile hike through the Trossachs to Callander. Then you switch onto your bike for the tough 39 mile ride to Killin and along the south side of Loch Tay to the finish at Kenmore. The Rob Roy benefits Alzheimer Scotland, WaterAid and Over the Wall. You can follow the progress of this years Roy Roy on twitter @RobRoyChallenge and #robroy2013
12th July Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon – a swim, hill walk/run, kayak & cycle
The original, and in my opinion still the best Wildfox event is the Quadrathlon – which I have completed twice. Last year I teamed up with the charity Mercy Corps. Now in its twelfth year, the Kindrochit Quadrathlon combines four tests of strength and endurance:
– Swim 0.8mile across Loch Tay
– Navigate and climb 7 Munros
– Kayak 7 miles
– Cycle 34 miles round Loch Tay
Challenge yourself. It is time to commit! Many people will read this blog and tell themselves… ‘maybe next year’ or ‘sounds amazing but I can’t do that…’ Think big, take on some big adventures this year and if you make it to Perthshire Scotland for one of these events then I will see you there.
Now, it is time to get out in that snow to play… I mean to train!
