Beating the World Record
THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE
Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne published in 1873.
Now, more than 144 years later, Mark Beaumont captured that same spirit of adventure with the Artemis World Cycle, his Record Breaking quest to cycle around the World in 80 days.
Leaving from Arc du Triomphe at 4am on July 2nd 2017, Mark cycled an average of 240 miles a day, every day for two and a half months, coming back to Paris in a time of 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes, breaking the previous circumnavigation by 37%, but only beating his target by 1.44%. A race to this endurance extreme is not possible without the dedication of a performance, logistics and media team including Una Beaumont, Laura Penhaul, Mike Griffiths, Johnny Swanepoel. Helmut Scherz, David Scott, Tony Humphreys, Alex Glasgow, Trent & Philip Keys and many more.
“THIS JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD IS THE CULMINATION OF EVERYTHING I HAVE PRACTISED AND BUILT IN THE PAST TWENTY YEARS. I BELIEVE THAT IT’S POSSIBLE TO GET AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS BY MANPOWER, BUT THIS IS A LEAP IN PERFORMANCE AND A STEP INTO THE UNKNOWN.”
The Custom Made Bike Created For Cycling Around The World In 80 Days
LIGHTWEIGHT AND STIFF CARBON FRAME
Mark rode a customised version of the KOGA Kimera Premium. The frame and front fork are FEM optimized and fully constructed from High Modulus UD carbon with a very high tensile strength, resulting in a lightweight and stiff frame.
Mark uses 28mm Panaracer tires. These “wide” tires provide the necessary comfort, but also contribute to better aerodynamics. Despite the width, these tires score points due to their low rolling resistance, which will help contribute towards the faster completion of the ride.
AERODYNAMIC AND FAST
In addition to the aerodynamic materials used, Mark will also adopt an aerodynamic riding posture, this has significant payoffs. The Profile Design handlebars and a Rudy Project aero helmet have been designed in such a way that Mark can maintain his aerodynamic posture over long periods.
POWERFUL BRAKES AND ACCURATELY SHIFTING
Hydraulic disc brakes provide the ultimate stopping power in all conditions and Di2 electronic gears are extremely fast, accurate and effortless, allowing Mark to conserve energy, and ride efficiently.
16 hours and 240 miles a day spent on a saddle, just imagine it! Mark has been using the Selle SMP Pro saddle for many years, enabling him to endure such long rides without significant physical problems.
